03. Health care no longer affordable

Partly due to an increasing and more complex demand for care, healthcare costs have risen sharply in recent years. Without fundamental changes, this trend will continue. Healthcare is no longer affordable if we want to guarantee its quality and accessibility.

  • Four targets in one:
    • improving the perceived quality of care,
    • improving health,
    • reducing healthcare costs,
    • improving the welfare of the caregiver.
  • Cost increase:
    • two-thirds can be attributed to developments in medical technology and the increase in prosperity,
    • one third to the ageing population and population growth,
    • the rest of the cost of medication and personnel.
  • Implementation of technology without substitution or upscaling leads to higher costs
  • Globally, a shortage of 12.9 million care workers is predicted to exist by 2035 and the available care providers are becoming relatively more expensive.
  • The demand for transparency in healthcare is increasing.
  • Citizens and patients are increasingly aware of the possibilities, which means that wishes and expectations will increase.
  • People demand the care that is possible.
